When there is a vessel on your port side and you have enough sea room, the safest approach is to communicate your intention and maneuver to pass on the other vessel’s starboard side, keeping a safe distance. Maintaining a clear lookout and adjusting speed as needed are still important, but this combination of signaling and a controlled starboard turn provides a coordinated, safe passing maneuver without unnecessary delay or abrupt actions.
